Rapidly rising seas are wreaking havoc on Louisiana’s coastal wetlands, and could devastate three-quarters of the state’s natural buffer against hurricanes in the coming decades, scientists found in a study published Thursday.

Seafood lovers here in the South are facing a big problem. There's a serious shortage of crawfish and that's driving the price up.

Now, the Louisiana Department of Agriculture & Forestry is asking the federal government to step in.

It’s country food prepared at the camp or a fais do-do. Plate lunch joints across south Louisiana are renowned for it. It’s a familiar sight in Mamaw’s kitchen or at a Saturday tailgate.

It’s not gumbo or étouffée — it’s rice and gravy, a dish as recognizable as any in Louisiana’s pantheon of culinary rockstars, but interestingly hard to pin down.

It’s crawfish season in Southeast Louisiana and farmers are actively at work trying to catch the precious and delicious seafood delicacy. 

One local man has been at it for close to 2 decades, adding that he’s proud to keep a small piece of our shrinking Cajun heritage alive through his work. 

Mark Boudreaux has been a crawfish farmer since 2005 — a job that he said is a labor of love. Boudreaux said crawfishing is hard work, but it’s fulfilling. He said he’s proud to.

Little free pantries, also known as “blessing boxes” or “little food pantries,” are easily accessible, miniature food pantries. Stocked by neighbors for neighbors, little free pantries are crowd-sourced solution to addressing limited food access needs in communities.

For seafood lovers in southern Louisiana, crawfish season comes with a special regimen.

“I come all the time. I come every day, sometimes twice a day,” Patrice Adams said with her order from Captain Sid’s in Metairie. “Normally, I buy between 5 and 10 (pounds).”

But at around $10 a pound, a usual order of 5-10 pounds quickly drops to 2 pounds.

A few years ago, the CDC issued a warning to Louisiana hunters about "Zombie Deer". Now, the Louisiana’s Department of Wildlife and Fisheries is reporting a total of 19 deer afflicted with chronic wasting disease.
