Farmers, Ranchers Now Can Make USDA Farm Loan Payments Online

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced that most farm loan borrowers will be able to make payments to their direct loans online through the Pay My Loan feature on farmers.gov in early February. Pay My Loan is part of a broader effort by USDA’s Farm Service Agency (FSA) to streamline its processes, especially for producers who may have limited time during the planting or harvest seasons to visit a local FSA office; modernize and improve customer service; provide additional customer self-service tools; and expand credit access to assist more producers.

National Sorghum Foundation Announces 2024-2025 Scholarships

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced two U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) investments designed to support the U.S. specialty crops industry. The launch of the Assisting Specialty Crop Exports (ASCE) initiative will provide $65 million for projects that will help the specialty crop sector increase global exports and expand to new markets.

Additionally, today USDA is announcing $72.9 million in grant funding available to support the specialty crops industry through the Specialty Crop Block Grant Program.

‘Mr. Ray,’ Crop Consultant, Farmer, Leader, Friend Dies at 94

Mayther Ray Young, or “Mr. Ray,” as he was known to literally thousands of farmers, crop consultants and other people in and out of agriculture, has died. He was 94.

Mr. Ray, who is generally credited with being the father of crop consulting in the United States if not the world, passed away peacefully at his home in Wisner, La., on Jan. 21, surrounded by members of his family.

Did the Recent Rains Help the Louisiana Crawfish Season?

North Louisiana has seen over nine inches of rain over the past several days, and more is expected into Friday night.  But despite the deluge Louisiana has received, it won't be enough to be able to salvage this year's crawfish season.

Crawfish expert Mark Shirley, from the LSU AgCenter said, unfortunately, we won't see any substantial benefit from the recent rains. Shirley said the rains will help to flush the ponds, but won't increase the crawfish harvest.
