2022 Ag Trade Includes Wins And Losses, AFBF

2022 was a record year for U.S. agricultural trade, topping $196 billion. Despite an 11% increase from 2021, it wasn’t all good news for America’s farmers and ranchers. While export values increased, overall export volume decreased by 6%. Imports of agricultural goods also increased by $28 billion, creating a trade deficit for 2022. American Farm Bureau Federation economists analyzed the trade numbers in their latest Market Intel report.

Nestlé Purina PetCare Company is voluntarily recalling select lots of Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets EL Elemental (PPVD EL) prescription dry dog food due to potentially elevated levels of vitamin D. Vitamin D is an essential nutrient for dogs; however, ingestion of elevated levels can lead to health issues depending on the level of vitamin D and the length of exposure. Vitamin D toxicity may include vomiting, loss of appetite, increased thirst, increased urination, and excessive drooling to renal (kidney) dysfunction.

2023 USDA Farm Income Forecast Erases 2022 Gains

While America’s families continue to deal with record-high grocery prices, farm families can expect to see a drop in income in 2023. American Farm Bureau Federation economists analyzed USDA’s Farm Sector Income Forecast in their latest Market Intel report. U.S. net farm income is forecast to fall almost 16% from last year, while costs are expected to increase more than 4%, on top of a record increase in production expenses last year.

Feral Hogs Accepted as Donations to Feed Hungry

Hunters For The Hungry Louisiana is now accepting hog donations at partner processors that are signed up with the organization throughout the state. Under the “Freshly Harvested Game Program,” deer have been approved to be processed and delivered to one of Louisiana’s five food banks and their affiliate kitchens and shelters. Due to the current need to control the feral hog population in Louisiana, hogs are now added to the program and accepted year-round.
