SU Ag Center set to host its 82nd Annual State Livestock and Poultry Show
Small farmers from throughout the state will gather at the Maurice A. Edmond Livestock Arena from February 27 – March 1, 2025, to compete for an opportunity to be named grand champion during the Southern University Ag Center’s 82nd Annual State Livestock and Poultry Show.
Several events have been planned leading up to the Annual Show. These events include the Boots and Bling Affair, a Livestock Give Day, and an Educational Expo for local students.

Center of Excellence at the Southern Ag Center Partners On $500,000 USDA Grant To Improve Food Safety Training
The Center of Excellence for Nutrition, Health, Wellness, and Quality of Life (COE) at the Southern University Ag Center is part of a collaborative effort recently awarded nearly $500,000 in funding from the U.S. Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture’s (USDA-NIFA) Food Safety Outreach Program (FSOP). The Southern University Ag Center received $70,000 of this funding to play a key role in outreach and training delivery.

Research Team Awarded Grant to Better Train Farm Workers on Food Safety, Handling
A team of researchers in Louisiana and Florida recently received nearly $500,000 in grant funding from the U.S. Department of Agriculture National Institute for Food and Agriculture to better train farm workers and underserved farmers in food safety practices.
The team, composed of researchers from the LSU AgCenter, Southern University Ag Center and Florida A&M University, will use the funds to provide interactive techniques, which the researchers believe will provide better learning opportunities for the farm workers.

SU Ag Center Continues its Partnership with the NMSDC Acres Program
The Southern University Agricultural Research and Extension Center (SU Ag Center) and the National Minority Supplier Development Council (NMSDC) have continued their partnership to enhance NMSDC’s 2025 Acres: Cultivating Equity in Black Agriculture program.
In its second year as NMSDC’s educational partner, the Southern University Ag Center will continue to provide instructors and course material for the Acres 12-week learning curriculum focused on growing program participants’ capacity to take on major national contracts with NMSDC corporate members.

The SU Ag Center is Now Accepting Meat Pre-orders for the 2025 Annual Livestock Show
The Southern University Ag Center will host its 82nd Annual Livestock and Poultry Show from Feb. 27 – March 1, 2025, at the Maurice A. Edmond Livestock Arena. In preparation for the show, the Livestock Show Office is now accepting pre-orders of non-processed choice meats from various livestock. All proceeds from the meat sales go directly to the participating youth as a reward for their hard work and financial investment.

SU Ag Center and College of Ag Set to Hold Ag Week Nov. 4 – 9, 2024
The Southern University Agricultural Research and Extension Center (SU Ag Center) and the College of Agricultural, Human and Environmental Sciences (CAHES) have partnered with SU Athletics to host an Ag Game on Nov. 9 against Bethune-Cookman College in A.W. Mumford Stadium. The campus has planned a week of events for the community and agriculture students leading up to the game.
Festivities will kick off on Nov. 4 with Jagie’s Research Rampage: A Social Media Adventure, which will highlight some of the Ag Center’s research projects, will be held throughout the day on the SU Ag Center’s social media platforms.

SU Ag Center Set to Host 3rd Annual Vino on the Bluff Scholarship Wine Tasting Fundraiser
The Southern University Ag Center and the College of Agricultural, Human and Environmental Sciences (CAHES) will host the 3rd Annual Vino on the Bluff Wine Tasting Fundraiser at 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 18, 2024 at the Leon R. Tarver II Cultural and Heritage Center, 8320 G. Leon Netterville Dr., on the Southern University campus.
General admission tickets are $75. Elevated (VIP) tickets are $100 and will include a VIP Whiskey Tasting at sunset.

SU Ag Center launches Disaster Education Resource through EDEN and the Extension Foundation
Southern University Agricultural Research and Extension Center, SU Ag Center, staff recently launched a new resource titled, "Advancing Disaster Education: 1890 Research-Based Curriculums, Lessons and Workshops." The project compiles educational modules, workshop agendas, and a collection of relevant fact sheets related to disaster education from 1890 land-grant institutions.
The publication was made possible by an Extension Disaster Education Network Development (EDEN) Grant and published by the Extension Foundation.

Collaboration, Award Ceremony Highlights the NCH Extension Conference
Extension agents from both the LSU and Southern University agricultural centers came together at the Baton Rouge Mariott to learn and create new connections at the Louisiana NCH Extension Conference Aug. 28 to 30.
On Aug. 29, attendees went to different presentations, luncheons and ceremonies to learn more about NCH — or nutrition and community health — programs and to connect with other agents they may not have met before.

SU Ag Center to Host Drone Demo Daze for Youth
The Southern University Ag Center’s Youth Development program will host its first Drone Demo Daze event on Saturday, Sept. 7, 2024, at the M. A. Edmond Livestock Arena Multi-Purpose Building, located at 14600 Scenic Hwy. in Baton Rouge, La.
The event will introduce the Ag Center’s drone program to 13-17-year-olds by providing information on careers in the drone industry, drone safety information, and ways to monitor the weather to determine if it is safe to fly a drone. The students will also have the opportunity to fly a drone.

Two individuals in the Southern University Ag Center and the College of Agricultural, Human and Environmental Sciences (CAHES) received the Southern University System’s Above and Beyond Award during the Southern University System Board of Supervisors meeting on August 16, 2024.
Dr. Oscar Udoh, Coordinator for Planning and Evaluation and Professor of Human Nutrition in the Department of Human Sciences, within the CAHES, received the faculty and staff Above and Beyond Award.
