MONROE, La. — The Henderson Project 4-H Community Club recently demonstrated the true spirit of service by feeding homeless people in Monroe, through a partnership with The Simple Project — an outreach that provides meals, clothing and compassion to those less fortunate.

The timing of the event was especially meaningful, as November is National Homeless Awareness Month, a time dedicated to recognizing the struggles of those without stable housing and encouraging communities to take action.

The 4-H youth, guided by volunteers Mary Nelson, Elisha Lucas, Adrian Nelson, Danielle Davis and Liyah Nelson, spent the day learning about homelessness and the importance of giving back through service. Together, they provided and served warm meals to more than 60 individuals, including children and adults, offering not just food but kindness and encouragement.

“The event was very eye-opening and showed how great the need is for volunteers to help others in our communities,” said Mary Nelson, one of the event’s organizers. “It reminded all of us that a small act of kindness can make a big difference.”

The meal was made possible through the generosity of donors, including A&D Helping Hands, IGA, Union Baptist Church Family, East Carroll Parish 4-H and local community members who contributed food and supplies.

4-H Agent Lekeisha Lucas expressed pride in the youth’s efforts, noting, “This was a perfect opportunity to teach young people about the importance of service; it gave them a hands-on experience in making a difference and showing compassion to others.”

For many of the youth involved, the experience was deeply personal.

“I realized how blessed I am and how important it is to help others whenever I can,” said 4-H member A'Rione Nelson, reflecting on the day of service.

The Henderson Project 4-H Club continues to focus on service-oriented projects that teach youth leadership, empathy and responsibility. Through experiences like this, members learn that true leadership begins with serving others.
