Terrebonne Parish Man Arrested For Livestock Theft

On October 3, 2023, agents with the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry’s (LDAF) Livestock Brand Commission arrested 49-year-old Louis Michael Hess, of Houma, La., on a warrant for theft of livestock. The arrest resulted from an investigation conducted by Livestock Brand Inspectors and a subsequent arrest warrant from Tangipahoa Parish.

Giving IRA Conservation Funds to Farm Subsidies Threatens Millions of Cover Crop Acres

Millions of potential cover crop acres that may help reduce farming’s greenhouse gas emissions could be lost under a plan to shift $19.5 billion in Inflation Reduction Act, or IRA, funding from conservation programs to increasing price guarantees for farm subsidy programs.

Although many of the states that got the most payments were in the Midwest, the state with the largest EQIP payments for cover crops was Tennessee, at $45.8 million. Louisiana was also in the top 10 states, at number nine, with almost $18.9 million.

Forestry Festival Kicks Off in Vernon Parish

The West Louisiana Forestry Festival is in full swing on the Vernon Parish fairgrounds.

The festival is held Oct. 4-8 and includes live music and DJs, roping contests, livestock, vendors and more.

Proposed Grain Terminal Would Harm Historic Slave Sites in St. John Parish, Review Finds

A proposed grain terminal would harm the setting, characteristics and economies of three historic Mississippi River plantations and a cemetery in the nearly all-Black community of Wallace in St. John the Baptist Parish, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has determined.

The findings are part of an environmental review the Corps conducted on the proposed construction of the Greenfield grain terminal, a $400 million grain elevator complex in a historic Black community around Whitney Plantation.

That is why the Vernon Parish Cattlemen’s Association (VPCA) is recruiting the next generation of farmers by hosting its Youth Farm Day at the Porter and Son’s Ranch in Leesville.
