River Rebound: Is The Shipping Crisis On The Mississippi Ending?

The shipping crisis on the Mississippi River might finally be ending. Since last July, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has been dredging the river 24 hours a day, seven days a week to ease shipping backups. 

With improved snowpack in areas such as Montana and precipitation through the midsection of the country late last fall and this winter, the Mississippi River and its tributaries could be back to normal by this spring.

USDA Announces Next Steps in Providing Financial Assistance to Borrowers Who Have Faced Discrimination

Today, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced the first steps in its process for providing financial assistance to farmers, ranchers or forest landowners who have previously suffered discrimination with respect to USDA farm lending programs. In addition, USDA set a target of distributing the allocated funds, which were authorized by the Inflation Reduction Act, out to borrowers by the end of 2023. This process has been carefully designed in accordance with the IRA, the Federal Acquisition Regulation, and significant stakeholder input.

Unfilled Railroad Grain Car Orders Persist into 2023

As shared in an October 2022 Market Intel, third quarter domestic rail service data indicated improvements in average rail speeds, unfilled grain car orders and employment numbers. A dive into the most recent data from the Surface Transportation Board, the independent agency tasked with economic regulation of freight rail, reveals an unexpected increase in the unfilled order metric for some Class I railroads, which continues to hinder farmers’ and ranchers’ abilities to move inputs and products efficiently and cost effectively.
