Crawfish Researcher Shares Thoughts On Mudbugs

Christopher Bonvillain knows crawfish. An associate professor at Nicholls State University, he works in one of Louisiana's only aquatic ecology and astacology labs. Astacology is the study of crawfish - a big industry in Louisiana, with 110 million pounds harvested each year, according to the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries. FSA County Committee Election

In early November, ballots were mailed out for the Farm Service Agency (FSA) county and urban county committee elections to all eligible agricultural producers and private landowners across the country. Elections are occurring in certain Local Administrative Areas (LAA) for these committee members who make important decisions about how federal farm programs are administered locally. Producers and landowners must return ballots to their local FSA county office or have their ballots be postmarked by Dec. 5, 2022, in order for those ballots to be counted.

DOT Denies Hours of Service Exemption for Livestock: Puts Burden on Cattle Producers

Farm groups have been working with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration agency for months to allow additional time on the road for truckers transporting livestock, insects and aquatic animals and make them exempt from some Hours-of-Service rules. The livestock industry will retain the 150-mile air radius exemption on the front and back of a shipment, but the agency has denied the HOS request which puts producers at a real disadvantage. It also couldn’t come at a worse time with a trucker shortage and pending rail strike.

2022 Cotton Crop Recap

Cotton harvest in Louisiana is wrapping up and was around 98% completed as of Nov. 4, which is around 10% greater than our five-year average. We couldn’t have asked for better weather during harvest this year. Hot and dry conditions throughout the growing season and excessive rainfall in August resulted in extremely variable yields throughout the state. Average yields for the state are projected to be around 850 lbs. of lint per acre, which is below the 2021 state average.
