SU Ag Center to Host Campus Market on Oct. 19
The Southern University Ag Center will host a Campus Market on October 19, 2022, from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. on campus at Lee-Hines Baseball Stadium.
The market will be open to Southern University students, faculty, staff, and the community. There will be a free CSA Bag Giveaway consisting of ground beef, greens, eggs, and tomatoes. This will be served on a first come, first served basis. Participants will also be able to attend demonstrations on food safety.

Against the Odds: Louisiana Small Farmer Larry Freeman Continues the Legacy
Mr. Larry Freeman, born in Independence, LA, native of St. Helena Parish is a third-generation farmer who owns the same land in which he grew up on as a child. Freeman credits his grandfather for not selling the land after purchasing it six years after slavery in 1873 for $1,280. His farm roots began young, but he set up his own cattle business in the late 90s.

Clourth Wilson appointed Director of Technology at the SU Ag Center
Clourth Wilson has been named the Director of Technology at the Southern University Ag Center and the College of Agricultural, Family and Consumer Sciences (CAFCS). The appointment was approved by the Southern University Board of Supervisors during its Sept. 16 board meeting.

This year’s theme is “Sustaining Small Farms with Innovative Practices,” which will be highlighted through four educational tracks that farmers can choose that meet their individual farm needs.

USDA Names Thirteen Southern University Students National 1890 Scholars
The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has named thirteen Southern University students as 1890 National Scholars.
With the selection of 133 scholars at nineteen universities, Southern University received the second largest number of scholars, 13.

Southern University in the LSU ASPIRE Program
This summer, students in the College of Agricultural, Family and Consumer Sciences participated in the LSU Ag Center sponsored Agricultural Sciences Professional Internships in Research and Extension (ASPIRE) program. This 10-week paid internship allowed undergraduates to develop their skills and knowledge in agricultural research and outreach and to help expand the diversity of talent pool in the agricultural workforce.

Morehouse Growers Celebrate 20 Years At Annual Field Day
Since 2002, Black farmers from across the country have converged on north Louisiana for the Morehouse Parish Black Farmers Field Day.
The bulk of the Southern University and LSU AgCenter field days are held at branches of the Louisiana Agricultural Experiment Station around the state. But this 20-year tradition is held annually on the farm of one of the members of the Morehouse Black Farmers and Landowners Association.

The Southern University Ag Center held its first JAGcation Summer Camp with 24 campers from June 13-24, 2022 on the Southern University campus.
