Morganza Spillway Opening Delayed, but Tropical System May Also Threaten New Orleans

The Army Corps of Engineers announced Monday (June 3) that it has delayed until Sunday the opening of the Morganza Spillway to divert part of the flow of the Mississippi River into the Atchafalaya Basin to reduce the chance of levees being overtopped in Baton Rouge. This second delay – officials last week delayed the opening until this Thursday – is the result of breaches and overtopping of levees along the Arkansas River.
