New Vaccine Could Save Cattle From BRD

The cattle industry is losing $1 billion each year with no end in sight. One researcher believes his team can help save it.

Shafiqul Chowdhury, a professor of molecular and researcher at the Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine, has developed a new vaccine that could prevent the spread of bovine respiratory disease. Cattle already receive a vaccine, but eight million calves still die each year, hindering the beef and milk supply. The current vaccine does not prevent the spread of bovine respiratory disease and does not contain a DIVA marker—what distinguishes infected from vaccinated animals.

In 2021, the port’s terminals processed over 37 million short tons of combined import and export product. This ranks the Port of Baltimore 17th in terms of cargo throughput in the United States.

How Drought is Destroying the US Crawfish Sector

Over the past decade, crawfish (often known as crayfish outside the US) production in Louisiana and the surrounding region has grown to become, arguably, the second most valuable sector in US aquaculture behind only catfish. This low-input, environmentally sustainable industry is based on management practices that mimic natural hydrological and vegetative cycles. It is also, however, greatly influenced by the weather and when normal precipitation patterns are disrupted crawfish populations (and harvests) can be significantly impacted. This 2023- 2024 season is a sobering illustration of how severe those impacts can be.

Louisiana Landowner Challenges Open Fields Doctrine

Two words are usually enough to keep uninvited visitors off private property: “No trespassing.” But game wardens ignore the signs that mark the perimeter of Tom Manuel’s timberland in East Felicia Parish, Louisiana.

Manuel was shocked the first time he found a Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries official on his land without a warrant.
