Trycera® Herbicide Receives Federal Registration for Sugarcane

Trycera herbicide from Helena Agri-Enterprises has received federal registration from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for use in sugarcane. Trycera is the first triclopyr product to be approved for use in the crop. It offers sugarcane growers a new tool to control Divine nightshade and other problematic weed species, pending approval by state regulatory agencies.

“Trycera was identified as a potential solution when a new invasive nightshade species was identified in a few scattered fields in the southern part of cane country in Louisiana,” says Dr. Al Orgeron with the LSU AgCenter.  “Traditional chemistries like 2,4-D and dicamba did not offer satisfactory control, and the weed spread rapidly to numerous parishes throughout the Louisiana cane industry.”

Trycera is formulated with performance enhancing ingredients, including Helena’s Moveo® Formulation Technology. It delivers triclopyr in its herbicidally-active form, leading to more efficient weed control compared to salt-based formulations. The addition of this active ingredient to the list of registered herbicides for sugarcane will aid in resistance management and alleviate the strain on growers to achieve effective control on many difficult weeds. Along with Divine nightshade, Trycera is proven to control other broadleaf weeds such as bushkiller weed and least snoutbean. It has also been shown to suppress bermudagrass when tank-mixed with certain registered HPPD herbicides.

Trycera was granted a Section 18 Quarantine Crisis Exemption by the EPA in February 2017 thanks to a collaborative effort between Helena, the American Sugar League and the LSU AgCenter. During the three-year crisis exemption, an IR-4 Project was requested by Dr. Orgeron to initiate research to establish residue levels for triclopyr in sugarcane. With support from Helena and other stakeholders in Louisiana, Florida and Texas, the data generated by the IR-4 Project was accepted by the EPA, and a full Section 3 label for Trycera in sugarcane was granted under the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act.

Trycera is also labeled for use in ornamental turf, forests, non-crop grazed areas, industrial areas, and aquatic sites. Sugarcane growers are encouraged to contact their local Helena representative or authorized Trycera dealer for availability and registration status in their area.
