The SU Ag Center and the NMSDC Acres Program to co-host Soul of the Soil
The Southern University Agricultural Research and Extension Center has partnered with the National Minority Supplier Development Council (NMSDC) to host the 2nd annual Soul of the Soil.
The event themed, “Rooted in the Future: Cultivating Tomorrow,” will be held from 11 a.m.- 1:30 p.m. on July 3, 2024 at Harrah's Hotel and Casino, 228 Poydras St, New Orleans, LA 70130.

Dr. Zhu Ning Named Southern University’s Spring 2024 Outstanding Researcher
Dr. Zhu Ning, Chair and doctoral program leader of the Department of Urban Forestry, Environment, and Natural Resources in the SU College of Ag, has received the Spring 2024 Outstanding Researcher Award from the Southern University Baton Rouge campus.
A certificate and a monetary award were presented to Dr. Ning on April 19, 2024 by the Southern University Office of Sponsored Programs.

SU Ag Center to Host Hip Hop to Gen Z STEM Camp
This summer the Southern University Ag Center will host a Hip Hop to Gen Z Camp, focused on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) for 6th – 12th grade students.
The camp will be held June 3-14, from 8 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. in Hayden Hall on the Southern University campus.

SU College of Ag Set to Hold Fashion Design & Apparel Entrepreneurship Summer Camp
The Fashion and Business Laboratory (FAB Lab) in the SU College of Agricultural, Human and Environmental Sciences (CAHES) will host its 2024 Youth Leadership Program LEVEL UP summer camp for youth ages 12-18.
This year, the camp will hold two levels. The first level will be for beginning sewists and will be held from July 8-12. The second level will open to intermediate to advanced sewists from July 29 – Aug 2. Both camps will operate from 9 a.m. – 3 in the FAB Lab inside Pinkie Thrift Hall.

2024 Quilt Design Summer Camp Set for Youth Ages 14-17
The Southern University College of Agricultural, Human and Environmental Sciences (CAHES) Fashion Merchandising, Design and Textiles Program will hold its 2024 Quilt Design Summer Camp from June 17 – June 28, 2024.
The camp will operate from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. (Monday – Friday) for students aged 14 – 17 years old in Pinkie Thrift Hall on the campus of Southern University.

The Southern University Ag Center will host its 19th Annual Connecting Businesses to Contracts: From Local to Global Business Development and Procurement Conference on April 11, 2024. The conference, which is themed, “Back on the Bluff,” will be held at the Southern University Smith-Brown Student Union and the Valdry Center for Philanthropy on Southern University’s campus. Southern University Hosting 81st Annual Livestock Show
Thursday morning, Southern University kicked off its 81st annual livestock show, and nearly 100 kids from across the state are participating while more than 130 animals are being showcased.
Dr. Harold Mellieon is the department chair for the college of agriculture. He says this year the school was able to help some kids compete.

The Southern University Ag Center will host its 2nd Boots and Bling Affair on Saturday, February 17, 2024, from 7 p.m. – 12 a.m. in the F.G. Clark Activity Center on Southern University’s campus.

The Southern University Agricultural Research and Extension Center (Southern University Ag Center or SU Ag Center) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Saint Kitts and Nevis Ministry of Education.
The signing of the MOU by Orlando F. McMeans, Ph.D., Chancellor-Dean of the Southern University Ag Center and the College of Agricultural, Human and Environmental Sciences, was held on December 27, 2023, hosted by Dame Marcella Liburd at the Government House in Basseterre, Saint Kitts and Nevis.

Dr. Charity Schaffer Named Parish Chair of St. Helena Parish
Dr. Charity Schaffer, Southern University Agricultural Research and Extension Center Assistant Area Extension Agent for Youth Development and 4-H in St. Helena and Tangipahoa Parishes, has been appointed the Parish Chair for St. Helena Parish.
As the Parish Chair, Dr. Schaffer plans to partner with the LSU AgCenter to ensure that all parish groups are being served effectively and to work alongside fellow local extension agents to develop strategies and affirmative steps for assuring open access to programs and services that will meet the needs of underrepresented groups within St. Helena Parish.

Southern University Teaching Faculty Selected to Participate in Mississippi River Delta Transition Initiative Consortium
Southern University College of Agricultural, Human and Environmental Sciences assistant research professors Drs. Jacqueline McComb and Crystal Vance have been selected and awarded $499,969 as a part of the $22 million multi-member consortium effort led by Tulane University and Louisiana State University to seek ways to save the Lower Mississippi River Delta.
