Dr. Sanjay Batra named Southern University’s Outstanding Researcher
Dr. Sanjay Batra, BASF Endowed Professor and Chair of the Department of Environmental Toxicology in the SU College of Ag, received the Fall 2023 Outstanding Researcher Award from the Southern University Baton Rouge campus.
The award was presented on Dec. 14 by the Southern University Office of Sponsored Programs.

SU Ag Center Set to Host its 2024 Boots and Bling Affair
The Southern University Ag Center will host its 2nd Boots and Bling Affair on Saturday, February 17, 2024, from 7 p.m. – 12 a.m. in the F.G. Clark Activity Center on Southern University’s campus.
Funds raised from the Boots and Bling Affair will be used to provide scholarship awards and necessary equipment for SU Ag Center’s youth Livestock Show exhibitors.

Southern University Ag Center signs MOU with St. Kitts and Nevis Ministry of Education
The Southern University Agricultural Research and Extension Center (Southern University Ag Center or SU Ag Center) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Saint Kitts and Nevis Ministry of Education.
The signing of the MOU by Orlando F. McMeans, Ph.D., Chancellor-Dean of the Southern University Ag Center and the College of Agricultural, Human and Environmental Sciences, was held on December 27, 2023, hosted by Dame Marcella Liburd at the Government House in Basseterre, Saint Kitts and Nevis.

Dr. Charity Schaffer Named Parish Chair of St. Helena Parish
Dr. Charity Schaffer, Southern University Agricultural Research and Extension Center Assistant Area Extension Agent for Youth Development and 4-H in St. Helena and Tangipahoa Parishes, has been appointed the Parish Chair for St. Helena Parish.
As the Parish Chair, Dr. Schaffer plans to partner with the LSU AgCenter to ensure that all parish groups are being served effectively and to work alongside fellow local extension agents to develop strategies and affirmative steps for assuring open access to programs and services that will meet the needs of underrepresented groups within St. Helena Parish.

Southern University Teaching Faculty Selected to Participate in Mississippi River Delta Transition Initiative Consortium
Southern University College of Agricultural, Human and Environmental Sciences assistant research professors Drs. Jacqueline McComb and Crystal Vance have been selected and awarded $499,969 as a part of the $22 million multi-member consortium effort led by Tulane University and Louisiana State University to seek ways to save the Lower Mississippi River Delta.

EPA Announces Nearly $800K to Southern University for Pollution Prevention Project
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has announced that the Southern University Ag Center received a nearly $800,000 pollution prevention grant. Nationwide, 24 recipients were awarded $16 million in grants through the historic Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, part of the Biden-Harris Administration’s Investing in America agenda. Southern University’s grant will fund a project to reduce water pollution from industrial facilities.

The SU Ag Center and the NMSDC Acres Program have Announced a Partnership
The Southern University Agricultural Research and Extension Center (SU Ag Center or Southern University Ag Center) and the National Minority Supplier Development Council (NMSDC) are partnering to enhance NMSDC’s Acres: Cultivating Equity in Black Agriculture program.
As part of the partnership, the Southern University Ag Center will provide instructors and course material for the Acres 12-week learning curriculum focused on growing program participants’ capacity to take on major national contracts with NMSDC corporate members.

Southern University College of Ag Changes Name to Reflect New Program Offerings
The Southern University College of Agricultural, Family and Consumer Sciences has been renamed as the College of Agricultural, Human and Environmental Sciences. The name change was approved by the Southern University Board of Supervisors on August 18, 2023 during the board’s regularly scheduled meeting.
The name change comes after more than three years of evaluations, academic program assessments, rebranding, revamping curriculums, and acquiring the Environmental Toxicology Ph.D. program from the College of Sciences and Engineering.
