Tangipahoa Parish Man Arrested For Theft Of Livestock
On March 19, 2023, inspectors with the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry (LDAF) Livestock Brand Commission arrested Mufid Thabatah of Hammond, Louisiana, for theft of 168 head of livestock.
The arrest was the result of a brand commission investigation that determined that on eight different occasions between September and November of 2023, 52-year-old Thabatah received livestock from a livestock market in Tangipahoa Parish but allegedly failed to pay for them in a timely manner.

LSU-Developed Vaccine Could Save U.S. Cattle Industry $1 Billion Annually
An LSU researcher has developed a new vaccine against bovine respiratory disease (BRD) and related illnesses that kill around 8 million calves each year and cost the U.S. cattle industry more than $1 billion.
Most cattle producers now use a commercially available modified live BRD vaccine containing several live viruses (a cocktail) to protect their herds. Still, the diseases kill more than one out of every five calves.

Louisiana Farm Bureau Helps Raise Money for Texas and Oklahoma Ranchers Affected by Wildfires
The Louisiana Farm Bureau is working with Texas Farm Bureau and Oklahoma Farm Bureau and other organizations to provide aid to ranchers who lost cattle, fencing, forage and barns to the wildfires in their respective states.
According to published reports, the Smokehouse Creek wildfire burned more than 1.1 million acres in Texas and wildfires in Oklahoma burned an additional 300,000 acres.

More Than 7,000 Head of Cattle Have Died in Texas Panhandle Wildfires, Causing a "Total Wipeout" for Many Local Ranchers
The Texas Panhandle wildfires are taking a significant toll on the region's agricultural industry. Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller told CBS News on Thursday morning that preliminary numbers show more than 7,000 heads of cattle have died in the fires, and that he believes the final toll could end up including thousands more.
The state has yet to get all the counts of lost cattle in the fires, he said, adding that the 7,000 death toll does not include cattle that will have to be euthanized due to their injuries.
