Agriculture Commissioner Mike Strain Warns of Higher Grocery Bills

AAA reports another large jump in gas prices as the statewide average for a gallon of regular gasoline is up another 15-cents from yesterday to $3.63. The price for a gallon of diesel gasoline has surpassed four dollars. Louisiana Agriculture Commissioner Mike Strain says the rising price for fuel will head to higher prices for groceries.

“If you look at the price of diesel and fertilizer today that will show up in the cost of food in 12 to 18 months from now,” said Strain.

LDAF Accepting State Organic Cost-Share Rebate Applications

Louisiana agricultural producers and handlers who obtained USDA Organic certification or recertification may qualify for reimbursement to recoup some of their costs through a 2021 State Organic Cost-Share Rebate program.

The rebates are available for USDA Organic certification and recertification expenses incurred between Oct. 1, 2020, and Sept. 30, 2021.

A Holiday Turkey Tip Got an Illegal Poultry Slaughterhouse Busted in Denham Springs

A Denham Springs woman received a warning from agriculture inspectors after they discovered she was slaughtering and processing poultry without proper approvals from the state.

A Ponchatoula-based farmer first notified investigators with the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry's Office of Animal Health Services in early December about a potential problem with Lucky D Farm on Hornsby Road.

The Louisiana Agriculture Hall of Distinction is still accepting nominations through Dec. 3 for its induction ceremony, which will be held March 24, 2022, in Baton Rouge.

The nomination form can be found online at www.louisianaagriculturehallofdistinction.com or at any parish LSU AgCenter extension office.

The nomination form should include the nominee’s major contributions to Louisiana agriculture, any leadership roles, honors and awards received by the nominee, and significant civic and public service accomplishments performed by the nominee.

$9 Million in Logging Grants up for Grabs in Louisiana

There’s free money for people in the logging business in Louisiana. The state treasury department says loggers can receive a $25,000 grant. It’s part of the main stream recovery program that was passed by the state legislature to help industries during the pandemic.

Right now, only 10% of the money available has been applied for, leaving $9 million still up for grabs for those in the logging industry. This is a first-come, first-serve grant program.
