Louisiana Farm Bureau’s Mike Melancon Recognized Among 2026 Sugar Notables

NEW ORLEANS, La. — Louisiana Farm Bureau Federation Secretary-Treasurer Mike Melancon was recognized Saturday evening as one of Sugar Journal’s 2026 Sugar Notables, an international honor celebrating individuals whose careers have made lasting contributions to the global sugar industry.

Melancon was recognized during the fifth annual Sugar Notables celebration at Antoine’s Restaurant in New Orleans, where family, friends and industry leaders gathered to honor this year’s recipients.

Published since 1938, Sugar Journal is one of the world’s leading technical publications serving the sugarcane, sugar beet and ethanol industries. The magazine established the Sugar Notables program in 2022 to recognize distinguished leaders whose careers have advanced the industry through innovation, leadership, research and service. Honorees are selected based on their length of service, career accomplishments, documented contributions to the industry’s advancement, involvement in industry organizations and demonstrated leadership.

Melancon was selected as the 2026 Sugar Cane Grower honoree, recognizing decades of leadership in Louisiana’s sugarcane industry. In addition to serving as Secretary-Treasurer of the Louisiana Farm Bureau Federation, Melancon has long been an advocate for sugarcane producers and the continued success of one of Louisiana’s signature agricultural industries.

Sugarcane remains one of Louisiana’s most valuable agricultural commodities, contributing significantly to the state’s farm economy and supporting thousands of jobs in farming, processing and transportation. Leaders like Melancon have played an important role in helping the industry adapt to changing markets, technology and policy while ensuring Louisiana sugar producers remain competitive.

Melancon was one of eight individuals recognized as part of the 2026 Sugar Notables class. Fellow Louisianan Wilson LeBlanc was also honored, receiving recognition as the Raw Sugar Processor recipient. Together, the Louisiana honorees represent the state's longstanding leadership in the sugar industry, while joining recipients from across the United States and internationally whose careers have helped shape one of the world's most important agricultural industries.
