The Farmer's Forecast: September 23, 2025

It looks like Louisiana has one decent chance of rain in the next week, and that will come today. It may linger into Thursday for south Louisiana, but if you need significant rain, I hope you get enough to last you by close of business Thursday.
The Storm Prediction Center has most of Louisiana in a marginal, level 1 of 5 risk for severe weather. I wouldn't be surprised if we saw a few damaging wind gusts, but the set up won't favor large hail or tornadoes. I won't say that either of those are impossible, but the chance is very low.
On the rain front, I expect most gauges to see 1/2 to 2 inches, with some isolated totals in the 4 inch range possible. There's also a marginal risk for excessive rainfall, but like the severe threat, I'm not overly concerned with any major problems.
The tropics are a bit more active, but this cold front passing through the state will continue to help keep us free of tropical problems in Louisiana. The later we get into the season, the further the jet stream dips south. That provides wind shear that is not favorable for tropical systems. I can't call an all clear on tropical season, but things are looking good with no threat through early October!
