2015 Louisiana Total Value of Production for Principal Field Crops (Excluding Sugarcane) Down 23 Percent

The value of production for principal field crops in Louisiana during 2015 totaled $1.85 billion, down 23 percent from $2.39 billion in 2014. The top three crop commodities (excluding sugarcane); corn, rice and soybeans, accounted for 80 percent of the total value of production for principal field crops.

All principal field crops in Louisiana, with the exception of hay and sweet potatoes showed decreases in value of production from 2014. Wheat in Louisiana showed the largest percentage decrease from 2014 at 72 percent, followed by cotton at 57 percent and cottonseed at 43 percent. Sweet potatoes showed the largest increase at 18 percent in value of production from last year followed by hay at 3 percent.

At the national level, the value of production for principal field crops was down 9 percent, at $136 billion, from 2014.  Corn, at $49 billion, was the leading field crop followed by soybeans at $34.5 billion and all hay at $16.8 billion.
