USDA Partners with FarmRaise to Offer Educational Tools and Resources to Promote Financial Access and Equity for Agricultural Producers

The U.S Department of Agriculture (USDA) today unveiled a new, online Livestock Indemnity Program (LIP) Decision Tool and farm loan resources available to agricultural producers and cooperators who help producers access USDA disaster assistance, farm loans and other federal farm programs. The new LIP tool and the farm loan informational video resources were developed in partnership with FarmRaise and USDA’s Farm Service Agency (FSA). These tools are now available at www.farmraise.com/usda-fsa.

West Feliciana Parish Man Arrested For Theft Of Livestock

On April 16, inspectors with the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry (LDAF) Livestock Brand Commission arrested Eric M. Harris of Weyanoke, Louisiana, for theft of three head of livestock. 

The arrest was the result of a brand commission investigation which determined that in August of 2023, 37-year-old Harris sold and was paid for three head of livestock from a West Feliciana cattle producer.

Cattle Producers Lose Industry Insight As USDA Cancels July Inventory Report

An extension livestock economist says the UDSA’s decision to cancel the July Cattle Inventory Report is a huge loss for the industry. Oklahoma State University’s Derrell Peel says this is a problematic time to lose access to data. “Given where we are right now, we’re in a cyclical low in numbers and we’re really concerned right now about sort of the process of stopping liquidation, stabilizing the beef cow herd,” he says.  “And beginning that process of rebuilding.”

LDAF Enhances Protective Measures, Encourages Increased Biosecurity in the Wake of Emerging Cattle Disease

The Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry (LDAF) is encouraging dairy producers to increase biosecurity measures at their operations in response to several reports of an emerging cattle disease across the nation. Herds affected by the emerging cattle disease have had detections of the Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) virus. It is currently unknown if this is the only contributing cause of the cattle illness. To date, HPAI has been detected in dairy cattle in Texas, New Mexico, Kansas, Michigan, Idaho, and Ohio. At this time, there have been no reported detections of HPAI in Louisiana dairy cattle or other livestock.

Dairy Cattle in Texas and Kansas Test Positive for HPAI

Dairy cows in Texas and Kansas has tested positive for bird flu, U.S. officials said Monday.

Officials with the Texas Animal Health Commission confirmed the flu virus is the Type A H5N1 strain, known for decades to cause outbreaks in birds and to occasionally infect people. The virus is affecting older dairy cows in those states and in New Mexico, causing decreased lactation and low appetite.

Tangipahoa Parish Man Arrested For Theft Of Livestock

On March 19, 2023, inspectors with the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry (LDAF) Livestock Brand Commission arrested Mufid Thabatah of Hammond, Louisiana, for theft of 168 head of livestock.  

The arrest was the result of a brand commission investigation that determined that on eight different occasions between September and November of 2023, 52-year-old Thabatah received livestock from a livestock market in Tangipahoa Parish but allegedly failed to pay for them in a timely manner.

LSU-Developed Vaccine Could Save U.S. Cattle Industry $1 Billion Annually

An LSU researcher has developed a new vaccine against bovine respiratory disease (BRD) and related illnesses that kill around 8 million calves each year and cost the U.S. cattle industry more than $1 billion.

Most cattle producers now use a commercially available modified live BRD vaccine containing several live viruses (a cocktail) to protect their herds. Still, the diseases kill more than one out of every five calves.

Louisiana Farm Bureau Helps Raise Money for Texas and Oklahoma Ranchers Affected by Wildfires

The Louisiana Farm Bureau is working with Texas Farm Bureau and Oklahoma Farm Bureau and other organizations to provide aid to ranchers who lost cattle, fencing, forage and barns to the wildfires in their respective states.

According to published reports, the Smokehouse Creek wildfire burned more than 1.1 million acres in Texas and wildfires in Oklahoma burned an additional 300,000 acres.
