Vernon Parish Cattlemen’s Association Hosts Youth Farm Day
The average farmer age in the United States is around age 60, a concerning statistic for an agriculture-driven country and community in Central Louisiana. That is why the Vernon Parish Cattlemen’s Association (VPCA) is recruiting the next generation of farmers by hosting its Youth Farm Day at the Porter and Son’s Ranch in Leesville.
Those students learned about farm safety, animal health, beef quality assurance, agriculture careers and farm programs from the LSU Ag Center, McNeese State University, Louisiana Wildlife and Forestry and the Louisiana Farm Bureau.

Cattle Farming Losses Likely from Excessive Heat, Drought in Louisiana
Extreme heat and drought this summer have led to losses in several of Louisiana’s agricultural sectors. The LSU Agcenter says the worst losses are expected in the beef cattle sector forced downsizing of cattle herds and other factors could lead to estimated losses of $135 million to $290 million.
The entire agricultural industry is experiencing impacts from excessive heat and drought, but beef cattle, are getting hit on several fronts.

A Japanese chemical manufacturing company has been working on creating liquid biomethane for cattle waste to use as rocket fuel.
According to the Kyodo News report, the company, Air Water Inc., says that it could begin trials as soon as this fall, using the rocket fuel on a rocket made by Interstellar Technologies Inc.
