Louisiana Rice Producers’ Group Voices Support for Governor Landry’s Diesel Relief

The Louisiana Rice Producers Group is pleased to join the American Sugar Cane League, LA Farm Bureau, and our partners in agriculture around the state, in thanking Governor Jeff Landry for his executive order declaring the emergency we are all faced with due to the shortage and high cost of diesel fuel, impacting our operations as we have never seen before in our industry.
As harvest across the state continues, the ratoon second crop harvest of rice is beginning as we enter October and the executive order suspending the penalty for using nontaxable, dyed off-road diesel fuel in vehicles registered for “Farm Use” or “Forest Products” while those vehicles are engaged in agricultural and timber harvesting operations is a welcomed sign of relief
“As rice farmers, we are appreciative of Governor Landry’s executive order easing some of the burden placed on the Louisiana producers by high priced fuel during this busy time of the year,” said John Owen, Chairman of USA Rice and a LA rice producer from Alto, LA. “While harvest is ongoing, it will provide some savings, and we all could use a little savings in these times,” he added.
As an industry, we also want to thank the LSU AgCenter for their work in researching and compiling the data that to support the economic crisis facing the LA farmer with diesel fuel being just one aspect of increased input cost facing our industry.
