House Ag Committee Member Says Farm Bill Markup Could Happen Soon

A House Ag Committee member says there are some signs of progress on a new farm bill.

“Hopefully we can get it marked up out of the agriculture committee this month or next month.”

Republican Don Bacon of Nebraska says rebuilding trust between both political parties after the reconciliation process has been critical. “We all know that we need to finish the farm bill and get it done. I’m hopeful that we can get this done because the most contentious areas have already been moved out under the reconciliation bill.”

He says the legislation still needs bipartisan support in the full House  because there’s very little wiggle room. “We typically 30 or 40 Republicans that vote against the farm bill. We typically get 30 or 40 Democrats that vote against the farm bill, which means in a very tight, even House, you’re going to need to have both Democrats and Republicans to vote together to get the farm bill out.”

Bacon says the committee’s leadership continues to meet and are committed to working with each other.
