The Louisiana Farm Bureau Federation applauds today’s announcement of a fully federally funded domestic production facility for sterile New World Screwworm (NWS) flies to be constructed at Moore Air Base in Texas. This critical investment represents a monumental step forward in protecting American agriculture, livestock health, and rural economies from one of the most devastating livestock pests in history.
“We thank President Donald J. Trump and U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins for making this facility a top priority and recognizing the importance of sustained preparedness against NWS outbreaks,” said Louisiana Farm Bureau President Richard Fontenot. “The ability to produce sterile flies domestically will significantly strengthen our nation’s biosecurity, provide immediate capability to combat outbreaks, and safeguard the livelihood of farmers and ranchers across the country.”
This facility will help protect the way of life for Louisiana’s cattle, equine, sheep, and goat producers. Livestock production is a cornerstone of rural communities in our state. Ensuring they have the resources to prevent and respond to NWS infestations is vital to maintaining animal welfare and economic stability.
“On behalf of our members, the Louisiana Farm Bureau Federation stands in full support of this project,” said Fontenot. “We look forward to working alongside USDA and state partners to ensure its success.”
