Farmer’s Forecast: Scattered Storms Ahead, but No Tropical Trouble

By Nick Mikulas

Louisiana Farm Bureau News/Cenla Weather

I learned long ago to give the weather forecast, and in most cases, avoid qualifying rain as “much needed”. The more I spoke with farmers, the more I realized that some of you may need rain, while others may need to get out and get some work done in the fields. With that said, rain is on the way, and I hope you need it!

I do think we stay mostly dry until at least Sunday as high pressure holds on. That high will shift south of the area, and allow daily rounds of thunderstorms that will be kind of tough to time until we are a couple days out. I think Monday through Wednesday is when we see the heaviest rain, but scattered storms will continue through the rest of next week, and into the weekend. I think a widespread 1-3 inches of rain will fall, with isolated areas seeing 5+ inches. There will also be some severe weather possible, but I think that threat will remain pretty isolated. This wouldn’t be a big tornado outbreak, but the potential for a few isolated damaging wind gusts is there.

Another note before I go. I’m not concerned about any Louisiana tropical trouble for the next week at the very least. I really don’t see a major threat in the next couple weeks. There are plenty of pages out there posting GFS model runs showing tropical storms in the Gulf. The GFS is notorious for doing that this time of year, and until I see other models hinting at this, I won’t be concerned. I’ll keep you updated on the latest!
