Carlyle Sapp Roberson Receives Louisiana Women in Agriculture Farmer of the Year Award

The Louisiana Women in Agriculture Group (LWAG) awards a woman with the title of Farmer of the Year at its annual conference that is held in Alexandria.  At this year’s April 2023 LWAG Conference, Carlyle Sapp Roberson was awarded the Farm Bureau sponsored Farmer of the Year Award.

Carlyle, who resides in Homer, Louisiana, is the daughter of Richard (late) and Lucy Sapp of Arcadia and is an Arcadia High and Grambling State University Graduate.  She is employed as an Accountant Assistant at a local bank in Ruston.

For over 100 years Carlyle’s family has been involved in Agriculture whether it was truck cropping, raising hogs, chickens, milk and beef cows, and horses.  Since 2014 Carlyle’s, Roberson Farm LLC has partnered with her brother’s Boise Land and Cattle Company with a livestock operation in Claiborne Parish.

For decades women were regarded as the behind-the-scene helper to their husbands who tilled the soil, repaired the equipment and took care of the livestock but there has been a shift in the trends as more women take over agricultural related operations. There are more women making the choice to enter agriculture on their own accord with a concentration largely on smaller livestock operations, organic crops or farms that raise fruit and produce for the local community.

“As a female, I am proud to follow in the footsteps of both my forefathers and mothers in carrying on the family tradition of being a good steward of the land, and raising and nurturing livestock.  With the networking, educational breakout sessions and tours rendered by the Louisiana Women in Ag Conferences, this has help me to become a better livestock operator.

“As the Vice President of the LWAG Board, I would like to encourage and invite the women of North Louisiana to come and join/participate in the LWAG Annual Conference.  The conference has had over 400 attendees at past events.  Also I would like to thank Century Next Bank, Pattons Western Wear, Origin Bank and Taylor Feed for their contributions to the 2023 LWAG Conference” says Carlyle.
