Louisiana Master Farmer & Feral Hog Events Scheduled
The LSU AgCenter and Louisiana Master Farmer Program have scheduled several educational opportunities in the next few weeks that include trainings, field days, and informational meetings. Master Farmer Phase 1 trainings include information related to water quality, Best Management Practices (BMPs), and conservation planning for agricultural producers. Trainings scheduled for June and July include:
June 28th - H. Rouse Caffey Rice Research Station in Rayne beginning at 9am
July 28th - Bob R. Jones Idlewild Research Station in Clinton beginning at 9am
The Master Farmer Program is collaborating on a research project funded by the Patrick F. Taylor Foundation to evaluate specific BMPs in row crop production, specifically in cotton, grains, and sugarcane. To highlight the project, a Best Management Practices in Cotton and Grain Model Farm Field Day has been scheduled for July 12, 2022 at the Somerset Plantation in Newellton, Louisiana. The field day will include presentations and demonstrations related to nutrient rich strips, water quality, variable seeding rates, and other soil health related information. Registration begins at 8:30am and lunch will be provided. Other Phase 2 opportunities include:
June 29th at the H. Rouse Caffey Rice Research Station Field Day in Rayne beginning at 7:30am
July 20th at the Sugar Research Station Sugarcane Field Day in St. Gabriel at 8:30am
To help address the continued issue with feral hog damage, the LSU AgCenter has scheduled a Feral Hog Management Meeting on July 5th at the American Legion Hall in Clinton, Louisiana. Experts from the LSU AgCenter, LA Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, LA Department of Agriculture and Forestry, and the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks will discuss updates on diseases, toxicants, control techniques, and transportation regulations. Meeting is free of charge, but pre-registration is requested.
