LA Wheat Crop Moves Along

Louisiana wheat farmers are finally getting to harvest their grain after a soggy start to the harvest season. The crop had to battle extreme cold in February and an extremely wet spring.

LSU AgCenter Wheat Specialist Dr. Boyd Padgett says while yields aren’t exceptional, they have met or exceeded expectations.

“The wheat crop made it though the freeze, but probably our test weights and yields will be down. And that’s really not the case. I mean they’re certainly not going to set any state records,” said Padgett.

Harvest is usually wrapped up by now, but like much of the spring planting, the harvest was delayed by torrential rains in April.

“Since April one we’ve had almost 20 inches of rain. And that certainly has kinda thrown a wrench in the harvest,” Padgett continued.
