Louisiana Crawfish Prices Change With The Times

Jody Meche farms crawfish in St. Martin Parish. He’s been a member of the Louisiana Crawfish Promotion Board for the past twenty years.

Meche says he really believes the efforts of the board have made a real difference in his industry.

“The board has been instrumental in opening up the markets and putting (crawfish) in the ears of a lot of people and making people hungry for crawfish so that we can move that bulk of crawfish when they’re coming in.”

Meche goes on to point out the work of the board has been and continues to be extremely important.

“I’ve seen an increase in our prices (for example). Years ago we were lucky to get a dollar pound for our crawfish and if we got over a dollar a pound that was exceptional! Now we get considerably a lot more than that when production is really low. When production is really low our crawfish are worth a lot of money. (But) naturally when production comes in at a peak time the price then can go down to where you get back to those older prices that we used to get years ago.”
