Sugarcane Base Reassignment – Deadline June 12, 2020

The regulation (7CFR, Part 1435.313) provides that sugarcane base acres in Louisiana that have been converted to non-agricultural use may be transferred to other land suitable for the production of sugarcane. Over the past year, county offices have researched land that has been converted to non-agricultural land and made reassignments of sugarcane bases where possible.  Farm Service Agency (FSA) county committees have placed all sugarcane bases that were unable to be reassigned into a pool for possible assignment to other farms.

The following parishes have acres available for possible assignment to other farms and FSA county offices will be accepting requests for sugarcane reassignments for eligible farms: Acadia, Ascension, Assumption, Calcasieu, East Baton Rouge, Evangeline, Iberia, Jefferson Davis, Lafayette, Lafourche, Pointe Coupee, St. Landry, St. James, St. John, St. Charles, St. Martin, Terrebonne St. Mary, and West Baton Rouge.

Owners, operators, and growers with an interest in sugar who have cropland suitable for sugar production and who are interested in having sugarcane base reassigned to any of their eligible farms need to contact the applicable FSA office to file a request. Base acres can only be reassigned to other farms within the same parish during this process.

All requests must be received in the FSA county offices by June 12, 2020. On June 19, 2020, there will be a random drawing from all requests received and the sugarcane bases will be assigned accordingly.
