Weed Management Research From Soybean Research Board
LSU AgCenter weed scientist Dr. Lauren Lazaro is using a grant from the Louisiana Soybean Grain Research and Promotion Board to find ways of controlling weeds after harvest She says harvest weed to control is one such tactic.
“It pushes weed seed into a narrow area so management can occur in that given area,” says Lazaro. “Potentially less herbicides used on the field, so really it’s just a better way to target those weed seeds and not allow them to enter the soil seed bed.”
Her research has been on going for the past three years, examining weed management tactics that are typically done in soybean production.
“After one or two years we’re not really seeing an effect, but after year three we begin to see a decline in the soil seed bank and in the above ground density of weeds, so weed pressure starts to decline. We have this added tool in our weed management tool box that can aid in our existing management tactics.”
