Cassidy Still Not Sure Which Way To Vote on USMCA
Louisiana’s senior US Senator, Bill Cassidy, isn’t committing one way or the other just yet on the US/Mexico/Canada Agreement which is designed to replace the North American Free Trade Agreement.
USMCA hasn’t yet been brought up for a vote in the senate.
“I think the most important thing I’ve hard from farmers, they want certainty regarding their access to key markets, particularly Mexico,” said Cassidy. “Whether or not USMCA passes, whether it’s NAFTA that continues or USMCA going forward, there’s gonna be that certainty. I think that’s important to farmers and I’m glad they have it.”
But Cassidy says he wants the agreement (if it passes) to benefit other areas of business besides agriculture.
“Frankly, I”m also trying to make it work better for some others in Louisiana. Not all folks are doing as well as farmers are. I want everyone to do as well as farmers. So far I’ve been holding back my yes vote, knowing it’s working for farmers, but I’d like to make it a little bit better for businesses that may have to, by Mexican law, invest in Mexico.”
Cassidy also told This Week In Louisiana Agriculture “And so my farmers are going to be good. We’re gonna make sure they’re good and I ‘m also trying to make it equally good for others as well.”
