Louisiana Corn Acres Could Increase This Season

Dr. Dan Fromme, the LSU AgCenter/Extension Service corn specialist at the Dean Lee Research Station just south of Alexandria, believes if most of the crop is planted prior to April first “We stand the opportunity to have some good yields at the end of the season.”

“Normally, when we have to plant corn as we get into April,” says Fromme, “based on past tests, we can lose anywhere from a half bushel to one bushel a day as get into planting corn in April. We had a wet fall and very wet winter so we’re very fortunate to have gotten some dry weather in the past one or two weeks.”

Fromme also says with another week of good weather most of the 2019 Louisiana corn crop will be in the ground.

And as far as corn acres are concerned this year, “I think they’ll be up. In 2018 we had roughly 460-470,000 acres. There will probably be fewer soybean acres this year, so at the current time we’re anticipating a little bit more than that 460 to 470,000, possibly as high as 550-600,000 acres of corn this year,” said Fromme.
