Correction On U.S. Rice Exports To Mexico
Southwest Louisiana rice farmer Jackie Loewer points out a couple of errors in a story from WAFB-TV we shared. While the U.S. does sell more rice to Mexico than any other country, we do not ship 50% of the rice grown in the U.S. to Mexico. Quite a lot of it, according to Loewer, but not 50%. And lot of the rice shipped to Mexico does indeed come from Louisiana rice fields.
The story also implied Mexico has a tariff on U.S. rice coming into that country. Loewer says there is no tariff on U.S. rice shipped to Mexico and the US/Mexico/Canada/Agreement will continue that process.
But exports are vital to the US rice market and will continue to be in the future.
“When half your crop goes on a boat (trade) is important,” said Loewer.
