Mississippi and North Louisiana

Mid-season is here or fast approaching on a large portion of the rice in my area. I’d estimate 25-30 percent of the rice has had a mid-season fertilizer application in the last 10 days with another 35-40 percent to receive it over the next 5-10 days. Overall, the crop is looking good. We’ve fought some weed issues in some areas but seem to have it under control. Going forward it will be important to scout for disease, especially in fields that have had heavy fertilizer applications.

CL153 is susceptible to sheath blight, so it will be important to keep an eye out for signs and be timely on fungicide applications. For fields where sheath blight is historically a problem, you may consider an application of a strobilurin fungicide at 7-14 days after midseason on CL153 followed by the late boot application for sheath blight and kernel smut.
