Louisiana Commissioner of Agriculture and Forestry Dr. Mike Stain, quoting an article in Southeast Farm Press about research conducted by Clemson University, says cotton nutrient management technology shows a savings of $54 per acre.

"Or put another way, an increased profit of $54 per acre using the new management technology developed at Clemson," said Strain.

South Carolina plants about a much cotton as Louisiana, roughly 180,000 to 200,000 acres per season.

"For instance," Stain continued, "automated tillage technology reduces fuel usage by near one-half on the soil tillage needed to protect row crop yields. And just 5% in spray reduction on 180,000 acres of cotton would put  an additional $420,000 in the pocket of the farmer."
