Louisiana Soybean Crop Looks Really Good Now
The LSU Extension Service doesn’t have a person on board yet to replace Dr. Ronnie Levy as the state soybean specialist, so Dr. Boyd Padgett at the Dean Lee Research Station has been filling that slot temporarily.
He says right now, the crop overall “looks great.”
About 98% of the beans had been planted as of June 11th and Padgett says another thing that’s encouraging is 76% of the crop was rated good to excellent. “So we’re off to a very, very good start.”
There have been some excessive rains reported around the state that’s caused flooding problems.
“I’ve been getting a few calls about flooding from around the state. But if it’s cool and cloudy, soybeans can stand flooding for 48 to 96 hours,” said Padgett, “which is incredibly long. But that can depend on a lot of different things as far as water clarity and things such as that. But overall, we’ve got a great crop.”
