Sugar Association Leader to Speak at Sugarcane Industry Annual Meeting Today

Courtney Gaine, president and chief executive officer for the Washington, D.C.-based Sugar Association, will be addressing the general session of the American Sugar Cane League’s February 7 annual meeting at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel in Lafayette, La. The general session begins at 10:15 a.m.

Dr. Gaine’s presentation is entitled “The Sugar Landscape: Nutrition, Policies and the Consumer.”

Prior to her appointment to the presidency of the Sugar Association in January 2016, Dr. Gaine served as the Vice President of Scientific Affairs at the Association. Dr. Gaine previously served as senior science program manager at the North American branch of the International Life Sciences Institute (ILSI North America), a public, non-profit scientific foundation that advances the understanding and application of science related to the nutritional quality and safety of the food supply. Prior to ILSI, Dr. Gaine held positions of project director, nutrition and wellness, at the non-profit organization Convergence and as a science manager at FoodMinds, a public relations firm. She began her career in academia as an assistant professor at East Carolina University.

A native Washingtonian, Dr. Gaine obtained her Ph.D. in nutritional sciences and biochemistry and bachelor’s degree in dietetics from the University of Connecticut, where she was also a co-captain of the UConn Women’s Basketball Team.

The American Sugar Cane League of the U.S.A., Inc. is a non-profit organization of Louisiana sugarcane growers and processors dedicated to supporting the Louisiana sugar industry through research, legislation, product promotion, education and public relations.
