Frosty mornings and some welcome rain showers arrived in Louisiana last week, according to LSU AgCenter Parish Agents in Monday's Louisiana Crop Progress and Condition Report.

Comments from Cooperative Extension Service Parish Agents:

“After a couple of frosty mornings, spring-planted crops are turning color with the season. Combines begin to roll through the second crop of rice with decent yields reported. Some late planted and replant soybeans remained un-harvested. Sugarcane harvest proceeded with good weather and ground condition. Rains with the last couple of cold fronts were real spotty with heavier amounts on the east side of St. Landry Parish and less amounts on the west side.” – Vincent Deshotel, Saint Landry Parish

“We are still dry. A little rain over the weekend though. Cattle producers trying to get ryegrass planted. Row crop harvest is complete.” – Carol Pinnell-Alison, Franklin Parish

“Dry weather had farmers continuing to work fields. A little rain shower over the weekend should help with ryegrass pasture establishment. Sugarcane harvest continued with excellent conditions. Ratoon crop rice harvest made good progress.” – Andrew Granger, Vermilion Parish

“Heavy rains toward the end of the week slowed field progress. Sugarcane harvest continued into some fields heavily lodged by wind and rain. Soybean growers were trying to wrap up harvest. Crawfish producers were utilizing rains to flood fields. Winter pasture planting is in full swing. The citrus and pecan harvest is light for many growers.” – Stuart Gauthier, Saint Martin Parish

“Rain showers on Friday slowed fieldwork and stopped ratoon rice harvest for a brief moment. Strong north winds have begun drying things out and harvest will resume early next week. Cooler weather has started to come into the area. Cattlemen rushed to apply ryegrass seed ahead of the showers.” - Jeremy Hebert, Acadia Parish
