Louisiana Rice, Cotton and Corn Acreage all Higher; Soybeans Lower

USDA released its latest Acreage Report for Louisiana on Thursday. 

Louisiana rice acreage is up 12 percent from 2015, corn acreage is up 58 percent, cotton acreage is up 35 percent, and soybean acreage is down 13 percent from last year.  Here's the details:

Corn planted area for all purpose is estimated at 630,000 acres, up 230,000 acres from a year ago but down 100,000 from March planting intentions.

Cotton planted acres is estimated at 155,000 acres, up 40,000 acres from a year ago and up 5,000 acres from March planting intentions. Producers have planted an estimated 98 percent of the acreage to genetically modified varieties.

All Hay expected to be harvested is estimated at 390,000 acres, down 40,000 acres from a year ago and down 10,000 acres from March intentions.

Rice planted area for all rice for 2016 is estimated 470,000 acres, up 50,000 acres from a year ago and up 30,000 acres from March planting intentions. Breakout is 440,000 acres on long grain and 30,000 acres on medium grain.

Sorghum planted area is estimated at 70,000 acres, down 7,000 acres from a year ago but up 4,000 acres from March planting intentions.

Soybeans planted area is estimated at 1.25 million acres, down 180,000 acres from a year ago but up 100,000 acres from March planting intentions.

Sweet Potatoes planted area is estimated at 9,000 acres, down 1,000 acres from last year and March planting intentions.

Sugarcane for sugar and seed harvested acres is estimated at 440,000 acres, up 30,000 acres from a year ago.

Winter Wheat planted acres is estimated at 30,000 acres, down 80,000 acres from a year ago and down 10,000 acres from March plantings. If realized, this will be the lowest planted acres since 1978, when the state planted 29,000 acres. Wheat acres intended to be harvested for grain this year is estimated at 25,000, down 67,000 acres from a year ago.
