Comments from Cooperative Extension Service Parish Agents

“Corn replant about complete other than the fields that are still under water. The water is slowly going down. Beginning to fertilize and apply weed control in corn. Soybean planting began this past week.”  – Carol Pinnell-Alison, Franklin Parish

“Favorable weather this week allowed most farmers to complete their rice planting. Rice is germinating and fields are greening up. Many rice fields across Acadia Parish are being flushed right now and the drier conditions are allowing farmers to spray their fields with herbicides. If we miss the rain next week, rice planting should almost be about complete. So far this year, the growing conditions have been great. Pastures and hay fields are looking great as well. Due to the conditions of the pastures, livestock across the parish is looking to be in very good condition.”  – Jeremy Hebert, Acadia Parish

“Good weather has allowed for sugarcane farmers to apply fertilizer to a majority of the crop." – Blair Hebert, Iberia Parish

“Dry weather allowed growers to make good field progress. Rust is showing up in 540 plant cane. Cane growers are applying herbicide and putting out fertilizer. Some soybeans are being planted on sugarcane rows. Cooler, dry weather has slowed down some vegetable garden growth. Hay growers are applying herbicide, fertilizer and making some ryegrass and clover hay.” – Stuart Gauthier, Saint Martin Parish

“Farmers busy finishing herbicides, applying fertilizer, and some soybean planting.” – Jimmy Flanagan, Saint Mary Parish

“Sunny conditions, no rain, less humid temperatures. Field activities continue.” – Reed Himel, Terrebonne Parish
