Louisiana Planting Intentions - Soybeans Down 20%, Corn Highest Since 2007

USDA released its Prospective Plantings report Thursday.  Here are the numbers for Louisiana:

Corn: Louisiana corn growers intend to plant 730,000 acres, up 83 percent from last year’s 400,000 acres.

Cotton: All cotton acreage intentions are at 150,000 acres, up 30 percent from last year’s 115,000 acres.

Hay:  All hay acres expected to be harvested in Louisiana are estimated at 400,000 acres, down 7 percent from 2015.

Rice: Intended planted acres for all rice for 2016 are 440,000 acres, up 5 percent from the previous year’s 420,000 acres.  Long grain rice acres are up 55,000 acres from last year while medium grain acres are down 35,000 acres from a year ago.

Sorghum: Sorghum growers intend to plant 66,000 acres, down 14 percent from last year.

Soybeans: Soybean growers intend to plant 1.15 million acres in 2016, down 20 percent from last year.

Sugarcane: The first 2016 estimate of sugarcane acreage for harvest will be available on June 30, 2016.

Sweet Potato: Sweet potato growers intend to plant 10,000 acres, unchanged from last year.

Winter Wheat: Wheat acreage in Louisiana is down 64 percent from last year to an estimated 40,000 acres planted for all purposes in 2016. If realized, this will be the lowest acres since 1979 when the state planted 38,000 acres.
