Research Continues on Controlling Pigweed in Beans

The Louisiana Soybean and Grain Research and Promotion Board, funded through check-off dollars, is continuing to work toward solving as many problems as possible facing Louisiana farmers.

Chairman Raymond Schexnayder says controlling weeds continues to be a big problems in all areas of the state.

"I guess we're kinda lucky we don't have it as bad as some of the other guys in other parts of the country," says Schexnayder. "In Arkansas, I've seen pictures of fields with pigweed that has just taken over.

"Farmers aren't able to harvest because there are just too may pigweeds."

But how to stop it? That's where the research funded by the board comes in.

"I think we have some real good work going on in Alexandra (at the Dean Lee Research Station), the Northeast Research Station and in Baton Rouge on the main campus. It's like we're almost three different states," says Schexnayder.

Schexnayder goes on to point out different areas continue to be affected in different ways.

"Some of the stuff that affects the northern part doesn't affect the south and vice versa. So we try to spread our research around the state and find the best way to attack these problems," Schexnayder concluded.
