Nationally Renowned Economist To Speak At Annual Louisiana Sugarcane Meeting
The American Sugar Cane League’s annual meeting on Tuesday, February 4 will feature guest speaker Dr. Robert Johansson, the director of economics and policy analysis for the American Sugar Alliance (ASA). The meeting will be held at L'Auberge Casino and Hotel in Baton Rouge. Registration begins at 8 a.m. and the speaker's program will begin at 10:30 a.m.
Johansson will share his insights on the economics of sugarcane and sugarbeet production and the unique challenges facing the American agriculture industry today.
Johansson joined ASA in January 2021. Before joining ASA, Johansson was Chief Economist at the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), where he advised the Secretary of Agriculture, directed the analysis of commodities, and managed the designs of various USDA programs.
Attendees will also hear from Dr. Michael Deliberto about making crop insurance work for farming operations, League representative Jack Pettus who will outline the likely impact the new Congress and Presidential administration will have on the sugarcane industry and League General Manager Jim Simon will discuss topics of great importance for all League members.
Preliminary reports indicate that Louisiana's 2024 sugarcane harvest produced more than 2 million tons of sugar (raw value) which averaged out to 240.86 pounds of sugar per ton of cane.
The League's meeting is held in conjunction with the American Society of Sugar Cane Technologists bi-annual conference which is ongoing on February 3-5.
The meeting will also feature business reports, research presentations and a trade show. For our farmers, millers, researchers and industry supporters this is a “must attend” meeting.
