AgFax Mid South Cotton Report: July 2022

“We have been terribly, terribly dry, but over the past six days (from July 5) we’ve gotten pretty good rain everywhere. There were some isolated areas that didn’t get enough, but overall, it was a very beneficial rain.
“Insect pressure has been fairly light in our cotton. Boll worms and boll worm eggs are starting to pick up. Most of my cotton is the Bollgard 3, that makes an automatic treatment of a diamide when there’s enough eggs. Plant bugs are persistent, but not bad. We’ve been staying on top of them pretty well. Spider mites have flared up a little bit. We treated a few acres, but they never were a heavy concern. Cotton looks pretty good.
“Our corn is at about 50% starch line, so we’re about done with it. I think for the most part, we’re through irrigating the corn. Disease pressure has been very light. All we’re waiting to do is to start harvesting it about three weeks.
“Most of our rice is past green ring. Everything is pretty quiet in it. Redbanded stink bugs have really picked up in our soybeans, especially when they hit R6. We’ve had to spray a fair number of corn earworms in soybeans as well. Other than that, things are going about as normal as you can expect.
“Everything is moving along pretty smooth. There’s really no such thing as a normal year, but this is about as close as we can get. Other than we were terribly dry in May and June.”
