John Thompson Of St. Francisville Appointed To Cattlemen's Beef Board
John Thompson of St. Francisville, Louisiana has been appointed to the Cattlemen’s Beef Promotion & Research Board (CBB). The CBB is responsible for guiding the national Beef Checkoff Program.
Thompson is a fifth-generation cattleman. He and his wife Heather own a cow-calf/stocker operation where they also produce hay and timber. Thompson works as a contractor and operates a heavy equipment business.
“I’m excited to be part of the team that plays such an important role in how our Checkoff dollars are spent and provide feedback from a cattle producer's perspective,” Thompson said. “I believe it’s important to keep our future generations in a sustainable business, and to keep industry organizations like the CBB credible, producer input is an absolute must.”
Thompson is a member of the Cattle Producers of Louisiana and the Louisiana Livestock Brand Commission. He serves as the vice chair of the Louisiana Beef Industry Council, president of the Tri-Parish Co-op, president of the Feliciana Farm Bureau Federation and vice chair of his local Farm Service Agency. His past service includes membership on the Louisiana Farm Bureau Federation State Board and the West Feliciana Parish Ag Advisory Committee.
“We’re very pleased to have John as a member of the Cattlemen’s Beef Board,” said Norman Voyles, Jr., 2022 CBB chair. “He has been incredibly involved in various local and state associations in his home state of Louisiana, and we’re looking forward to gaining his unique perspective.”
The CBB consists of 101 members, including domestic beef, dairy and veal producers, as well as importers of beef and beef products. Producer representation on the Board is based on cattle inventory in each state while importer representation is based on a conversion of the volume of imports into live animal equivalencies. Each Beef Board member is appointed by the Secretary of Agriculture from nominations submitted by certified nominating organizations that represent beef and dairy producers in each state or region. Importer appointments are chosen from nominations by importer associations.
