Ranchers in Louisiana could be eligible for payments through the USDA’s Livestock Indemnity Program due to cattle losses attributable to Hurricane Laura. Death losses and the sale of stressed cattle at a reduced price could qualify for payments, but only if the losses are reported to the Farm Service Agency.

“You only have 30 days after a disaster to get everything turned in,” said Louisiana Farm Bureau Livestock Advisory Committee Chair Marty Wooldridge. “With tight margins, depressed markets and property losses for so many of our ranchers in this storm’s path, we want to make sure they get all of the help they need.”

According to USDA, Livestock Indemnity Program payments are based on national payment rates that are 75 percent of the matte value for the applicable livestock as determined by USDA. To learn more about the program and to report losses, contact your local FSA office.
