The road to lower auto insurance rates must pass through the Louisiana Senate Committee on Judiciary A, a place where lawmakers put the brakes on tort reform bills in the 2019 legislative session.

The committee is set to consider 11 pieces of legislation dealing with tort reform when it meets this morning at 10 a.m. Before the committee are three senate concurrent resolutions, five bills filed by senators and three bills passed by the Louisiana House of Representatives.

“We’ve been working closely with House Speaker Clay Schexnayder on his bill,” said Louisiana Farm Bureau Legislative Specialist Joe Mapes. “What we need now is for our grassroots members to reach out to their senators and tell them to support the best bill to fix the legal hellhole Louisiana has become and not send another bill, flawed at the last minute, to the governor’s desk.”

On Friday, Governor John Bel Edwards vetoed Senate Bill 418 passed during the 2020 regular session. An 11th hour amendment in conference committee would have likely led to increased auto insurance rates for drivers with minimum coverage.

The Senate Committee on Judiciary A meets in the John J. Hainkel, Jr. room at the Louisiana State Capitol.
