Pasture Walk for Beginning Livestock Producers Set for September 24 in Marion
MARION — A beginning farmer/rancher pasture walk/workshop will be held on Thursday, June 27, 2019, at Casey Towns Farm in Marion, Louisiana. Anyone interested in beginning their own grazing operation is encouraged to attend. This free workshop is being hosted by the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service and Trailblazer RC&D.
A pasture walk is a unique opportunity to walk a pasture, talk with other livestock producers about common issues and problems regarding grazing land and animals, and see grazing best management practices in action. This pasture walk will focus starting a grazing operation from scratch. Topics will include: using grazing to promote soil health and improve the small herd, basics of soil sampling and pasture fertilization, the value of manure and urine, and technical and financial assistance program available to small farmers and ranchers. Professional conservationists and grazing lands specialists will be on hand to answer questions and provide information on technical and financial assistance.
The pasture walk will begin at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 24, 2019, at Casey Towns Farm, 100 Langston Road, in Marion, Louisiana, and conclude at 7:30 p.m. Onsite registration will begin at 4:30 p.m. Registration is free, and pre-registration appreciated.
