American Sugar Cane League Hosts Annual Meeting February 5th

The American Sugar Cane League, the trade organization that represents Louisiana's sugarcane industry, is hosting its annual meeting February 5 at L'Auberge Casino and Hotel, 777 L'Auberge Avenue, Baton Rouge.

Jim Wiesmeyer, an internationally recognized commentator on agricultural/economic issues is the featured speaker. Wiesmeyer is a policy analyst for Pro Farmer agricultural magazine and a frequent guest on AgriTalk produced by the Farm Journal. He has interviewed every president since Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan. Wiesmeyer is expected to begin his talk about 9:45 a.m. Media is invited to the speaker portion of the meeting.

The Louisiana sugarcane industry had a $3 billion economic impact on the state's economy in 2018. It employs more than 16,000 workers. 423,872 acres of sugarcane across 24 parishes was harvested during the 2018 season with 1.8 million tons of raw sugar (raw value) produced.  Sugarcane has been one of the top economic drivers in the state for more than 200 years.
